January Harvest
Notes:
- The Sungold tomatoes lasted forever and produced so much fruit. Due to space, I harvested them early so they could ripen off the vine. It worked. Careful with this variety, it can grow pretty wild and tall (upwards to 10ft plus).
- In this harvest there’s meyer lemons, cilantro, green onions, carrots, celery, kale and speckled lettuce.
March Harvest
Notes:
- We had an absurd amount of rain in Los Angeles this spring (record breaking).
- Everything came to life, including plants that have been dormant for years.
- The super bloom swept the state.
- 1 billion (yes, billion with a B) butterflies migrated through LA. They stuck around for about two weeks to lay their eggs and drink water. Read about them here. It was pretty spectacular and I’ve never seen anything like it. There were thousands in the neighborhood and in the tiny garden.
- In this harvest there’s speckled lettuce, cilantro, radish, spinach and swiss chard, snap peas, parsley and carrots.
June Harvest
- This was the last harvest of onions and wild flowers.
- I swapped the tiny pollinator bed out for tomatoes.
- In this harvest there’s swiss chard, kale, pineapple sage, meyer lemons, onion blooms and onions.
It’s officially hot in Los Angeles, which always makes gardening a treat as well as a pest nightmare.
Right now, the tomatillos are forming, the tomatoes are ripening, I’ve harvested 3 cucumbers, the herbs have doubled in size, the cantaloupe are forming, so far so good.
The one negative thing has been the San Marzano tomato plant. One word, blight. I’ve been fighting it and trying to save the tomatoes that are almost ready. Fingers crossed.
